It’s definitely the most important day of your life! Something for which you’ll surely prepare for months, if not years.

While the objective is to look your best, the approach to achieving it can be really stressful considering the plethora of options, opinions and opportunities before you! Should it be a saree? If so, which colour and design? What about jewellery, makeup and hair style? Would you need a professional to drape your saree and help you with your makeup? And last but not the least, what about jewellery? The most important accessory set!

Like it happens with good and tasteful dressing, all elements and accessories need to blend in well - attire, hairdo, jewellery, footwear, mehendi etc. To begin with, you need to firm up on what look you wish to have for the occasion. Would it revolve around a saree or jewellery you already have, or are you planning to purchase all accessories anew? So presuming you have a suitable saree you wish to wear for the occasion, it is hairdo, jewellery and the overall look you need to focus on. Let’s discuss jewellery as that is the more critical and time-consuming part.

To begin with, decide in advance if you are going to buy the entire ensemble new or if you are going to mix/ match with a few pieces that you already own. Of course, you would have decided on the saree you are planning to wear. The attire combinations depend on the various activities in the wedding such as Sangeet, Haldi ceremony, Muhurat and Reception. It also depends on the ambience - outdoor, indoor, lighting, weather, space, theme and several other such things you must consider.

Now let’s look at the commonly worn pieces of jewellery, majorly made of gold with precious stones such as diamonds, worn for a wedding.

Necklace: The most visible of them all, the one that turns eyes, making you the cynosure of those around, is the necklace. Some simple tips while you choose one. Firstly, make sure its silhouette is aligned with your neckline. This could impact the look of your saree as well as the necklace. Choose your necklace carefully. It could be a choker, a piece that looks full and regal – a dramatic piece usually studded with various coloured precious stones and patterns.

You could also wear a single stringed necklace or one with patterns/ elements or stones at regular intervals. This is being worn more and more in recent times though it is a very traditional design. Of course it depends on the blouse you choose. If it is by and large plain with a distinct colour that accentuates gold, you have chosen a good piece to wear. Make sure it is not overdone and there is a fine balance between your saree and the accessory in terms of appearance and design.

Nose ring: Another distinct accessory is the nose ring. It could be small, look very simple and deceptive but trust us, it has the power to transform your face! Few other accessories have the potential to create an impact as dramatic as a nose ring. You don’t have to worry about getting your nose pierced in case you haven’t. There are several press-type rings available; they look amazing. Wear a few rings to decide on which one looks best for you. It depends on the shape of your face, your nose, the hairdo you plan and the earrings you choose to wear. Take your time to ensure it all comes together.

Bracelets and Bangles

Bracelets are very stylish accessories that stand out whether it is a wedding or a party. You could choose a single bracelet or a pair, made usually of gold, silver or platinum, embellished with precious stones or engraved with patterns. A single bracelet can contribute significantly to the entire look so do ensure you don’t wear too many of them or bangles alone unless they really go well together.

Bangles are an integral part of a women’s jewellery collection and one of the oldest and the most traditional of accessories. Choose a pair or two with the right designs, patterns or stone embellishments and ensure they complement your attire and other accessories. A good set of bangles immediately catches one’s attention. Ensure they match well with your necklace and stand out against your attire.

Finger rings and earrings

Finger rings come in various designs and colours and hold a special significance considering this is the first accessory gifted by the man as it is also an engagement ring worldwide. Finger rings add character and in a way reflect the attitude and expression of the wearer. Though small in size, they are among the most visible and shown off accessories. Choose a ring that stands out and matches with your saree and other pieces of jewellery if you plan to wear one that’s not your engagement ring.

Often essential wear, earrings distinctly accentuate your attire whatever the occasion. Earrings selected for weddings are usually Jhumkas, elaborately crafted elements that beautifully blend with silk sarees to give out a regal look. If you are choosing a pair of Jhumkas, do ensure they match with your necklace in terms of patterns and embellished stones. Of course, your wedding would have other activities that provide an opportunity for you to wear drops, studs, rings and other well-crafted wear decorated with stones, pearls or rubies. So choose carefully to ensure all the elements blend together.

Other accessories

Other accessories include a forehead pendant or a maang tekka, worn in most traditional Indian weddings. This consists of a chain that suspends a Teeka (pendant) on the forehead at the point where the hair is parted. The ornament gives a royal appearance and is embellished with precious stones.

Also an integral part of bridal jewellery are the arm band and waist band. An arm band is elaborately designed with stones and patterns and again looks regal in its appearance. The waistband also has elaborate patterns of intricate work and chains embedded with precious stones. This can be worn with a saree or a lehenga. These are very popular in traditional Hindu weddings and make the bride look really royal and radiant.

Last but not the least is the anklet or Payal. This completes the wedding accessory collection. Usually designed in silver with attractive and intricate patterns, these beautiful pieces are studded with precious stones. Choose a pair that matches with the dress you choose and you are good to go!
